Saffron cultivation in Afghanistan started in early 1990. Although, some historical record shows that saffron was being cultivated in Afghanistan centuries ago, somehow along the way it was abandoned and Afghan saffron was never heard of outside of its native land.

Climate is the key to saffron production, and Afghanistan has been blessed with a perfect climate, specifically the province of Harat. Harat is located next to Khorasan in the eastern province of Iran, where 95% of the Iranian saffron is produced.

This batch of Afghan saffron is from 2011 crop and has been imported in bulk. The threads of this saffron are short, all red with low moisture content which is perfect for grinding. It has a great aroma, strong coloring strength and abundant flavor.
